MISSING a BASE

Magyarul

The REALITY of the NATIONAL WALL HANGING (2013)

As part of the Eötvös Károly Institute adoption program of the orphaned decisions of the Constitutional Court

There is no democracy without a solid legal foundation. The fourth amendment to the Hungarian Basic Law rejects the decisions of the first twenty-one years of the Hungarian Constitutional Court. By destroying these precedents the nauseatingly Kitsch new ‘national’ reality has kidnapped Hungarian democracy in a fashion reminiscent of the world of the twee domestic wall hanging.

The draughtsman delineates, scratches at and tints the reality of the wall hanging of today’s Hungary. The lines of his frottage break off here and there; parts are missing. These missing parts form a structured image, or words. What is missing represents the outlawed legal foundation itself: more precisely, the place it used to fill, the place of the democracy that is missing. (Translated by David Robert Evans)
